On Monday 5 October, Diverse CDT welcomed our new cohort of PhD students for a full week of immersion activities.
The new cohort of 14 students had the opportunity to meet teaching staff and last year’s cohort in a week of exciting and engaging activities. The students spent one day together in Warwick University and another in the data visualization lab in City St George’s.
Our second-year students sent our new cohort on a scavenger hunt for interesting locations in and around the Data Vis Lab at City St George’s. They returned with a piece of ephemera (photos, illustrations etc.) from these locations and placed them on an abstract map to begin to build a picture of where Diverse CDT fits within the local environment.

New students were invited to bring a ‘wildcard’ – something they’d spotted while out and about that they thought our first cohort may not have come across yet.

There were talks from teaching staff as well as exercises in data visualization and a quiz.
At the end of the week, Jack Msonkho created this visually stunning image to visualize what he learned by exploring the area round the Clerkenwell campus.

We really look forward to helping our new students realise their talents in data visualization. It’s the start of another exciting 4-year journey!
Profiles of our new students will be appearing on our website very soon so come back and learn more about them.
