Upcoming Event: “What is Data Vis?”

5 February 2026

Thursday 5th March, 15:00 to 17:00 GMT

The modern world is swimming in data, but our brains often need help to interpret what really lies within. Data visualization reveals hidden patterns and trends, turning the unintelligible into the comprehensible. It has enormous potential for wide impact, providing key insights that unlock solutions to diverse challenges from the local to the global.

“Big Data Specialists” will be the fastest growing job area in the next five years, according to the World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Survey 2024. The same survey cites analytical and creative thinking as numbers one and four in employer-ranked core workforce skills. In short, data visualization encompasses precisely the key skills that the modern workforce desperately needs.

This two-hour, interactive event is being run by world experts in data visualization research in partnership with Colorintech, and will explore the real-world impact of data vis.

Professor Jason Dykes will explore the question “What is Data Vis?” with –

  • Diverse examples of effective data visualization
  • Exploration of what makes data visualization work
  • Explanation of why data visualization research is important
  • Tips on producing expressive and effective data visualization
  • Ways that you can get involved in data visualization.

Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with some of Diverse CDT’s current student cohort and learn about the fully-funded PhD in Data Visualization.

About the event:

What is Data Vis? will be held on-site in the Diverse CDT data visualization lab suite within the College Building, City St George’s, University of London.

Registration is limited to the first 30 people. Once you submit the registration, you will receive full joining instructions. The site has step-free access via lifts. If you have any accessibility needs, please let us know in the registration form.

If you have any questions for our students or speakers that you’d like us to answer during the event, please add them to the registration form. We will do our best to answer as many as we can.

About Professor Jason Dykes:

Jason Dykes is Professor of Visualization at City St George’s, University of London and National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2005). He co-founded giCentre, one of the UK’s prominent visualization research groups, which he directed for a decade.

Jason likes to design and develop innovative interactive maps and graphics that represent complexity with clarity. His research focuses on the technology, algorithms, experiments, and methodologies that help us understand the roles of, and possibilities for, these new visual artifacts that support knowledge construction and decision-making.

About Diverse CDT:

Diverse CDT (The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Diversity in Data Visualization) is a pioneering, fully funded four-year PhD programme jointly delivered by City St George’s University of London, and the University of Warwick.

Our mission is to train the next generation of researchers to design, develop, and evaluate inclusive, impactful, and socially responsible data visualizations that address real-world challenges.

Our programme combines advanced technical training, international lab exchanges, and real-world placements with a strong emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion. This ensures our graduates are not only skilled researchers, but also leaders in creating fairer, more accessible digital futures.

About Colorintech:

Colorintech started with a simple thought: what would the tech industry be like if everyone could participate and thrive? For eight years, they have worked to create access and scale opportunities so that anyone can succeed.

Colorintech is an industry backed nonprofit dedicated to making tech more representative, more accessible and more inclusive.
