The Bradford Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) exists to transform Bradford Council so it becomes evidence-led, and data driven, at all levels of decision-making to improve the wider determinants of health and reduce health inequalities. It was launched in 2023 with funding from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).

Bradford’s HDRC includes a data science team working alongside academics, policy makers and public contributors. It works closely with departments across the Council to improve the way research is conducted, data is handled and evidence is acted on. An important part of the HDRC’s work has been in improving the way data are presented to maximise its impact on decision making. Examples of projects to date include:

  • Visualising air quality data and impacts of vehicles not meeting clean air standards
  • Visualising town centre footfall data
  • Visualising data on beliefs about electric vehicles among taxi drivers to inform possible locations for additional electric charging infrastructure.

The Bradford HDRC will offer a range of projects visualising data relevant to the core things we all need to stay healthy, such as housing, education, employment, income, good food, and access to green space.
