Katie Grieve has a background in mathematics, where she developed a foundation in logical reasoning, abstraction, and complex problem-solving. In the final year of her degree, she explored topics in information theory, examining how difference is mathematically quantified and drawing on this lens to understand diversity.

She later worked as a data analyst in the tech sector, producing research on structural inequalities, diversity, and accessibility. This experience deepened her interest in data feminism, and in how data visualization can be used to examine power and communicate inequality.

In 2024, Katie received funding for Edinburgh Historic Walks, a project that used heritage walks to build community and highlight marginalised histories. Through this work, she began exploring visual storytelling as a tool for public engagement and for raising awareness of untold stories.

Through Diverse CDT, Katie is keen to explore the relationship between visualization and diversity, and to examine how data visualization can be harnessed to illuminate social challenges and contribute to meaningful change.
