Mustafa has a background in telecoms and broadcasting, and have previously used geospatial methods to help with network planning and helped answer policy questions around future of TV distribution.
Through Diverse CDT, he’s hoping to explore how data visualisation, as a way of making complex data transparent and digestible, can be applied to different domains to tackle societal challenges (including whether visualisations can be broadly embedded into policy processes)
His research interests include exploring the effects of visualisations on people’s perceptions and attitudes, and in particular whether visualisations can help different communities in conflict zones understand each other better. He’s also aiming to explore whether visualisation techniques can be used to help build radically simple interfaces to address digital exclusion.
